Exploring precedents ahead of North Place design development.


Ocean County Library Plaza 



mikyoung kim’s design of Ocean County Library Plaza uses lighting concepts in the landscape. The sculptural installation guides visitors to the entrance of the library and symbolises knowledge and community heart. 

 

The size of the lighting sculptures boasts a proud and enchanting statement supported by the liner paving design - both of which are representative of the concept. The multi route footpaths indicate considerations to the flow of visitors and approach routes to the site, they open up the front entrance to the street entirely, welcoming all visitors. The sculptures add ambience to the night street scape and a sense of safety. 

 

I admire the concept and approach but personally feel uneasy with the aesthetics. The form of the sculptures and paving choices against the existing surroundings provoke unsettlement and tension to me.  Though they may represent power, learning and drive there is an unwelcoming vibe. The sculptures certainly light the way but pose restrictions to the addition of outdoor furniture and limits to inclusivity – which should be desired outside of a learning facility. 


The City Dune



SLA’s Design of The City Dune is Copenhagen’s first climate-adapted urban space and takes inspiration from the sand dunes of Rabjerg Mile. The landscapes mimics that of the Swedish mountainside, with a terrain that rises from street to second floor – it is a project that offers inspiration. In my initial concept sketch I focus on the lay of the land and its inspiration to my design of the North Place multistorey. This project shows a successful execution of layered land, one that mimics the contextual landscape. I admire the use of trees and strategic form and placement of pathways but yet again – where are the seats, am I supposed to stay? 


Tanner Springs Park

 


Formerly a rail yard, this regeneration project recycles historic rail tracks and encourages natural systems back into the city. I think that the project executes it’s vision well, the history is preserved while limiting impact and the original function of the site has been restored to sequester carbon, improve microclimate and provide rest bite for both people and wildlife.

 

As much as I advocate for low impact development, recycling, and urban landscape restoration, to me, the park is missing something. Though innovative and purposeful I’m not sure how long I would want to sit and play?

This precedent has been chosen due to similarities shared with the site on Alney Island, spatially defined by the river Dora and characterised by an industrial past. Designed by Latz+Partner, the urban park has varied amenity areas for walking, cycling, skating and other sporting throughout the park. Notably, it repurposes an old strip steel mill into a covered event space, transforming the post-industrial landscape into one that is multi-use for local residents. Similarly, there is a potential opportunity in Alney Island to repurpose the Electricity Sub Station building into a unique post-industrial event space. The inclusion of street art in this urban park serves as a colourful remedy for the potential eyesores stemming from existing industrial features. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Phase 2: Initial design overlays & concept

My initial overlay sketches to experiment with the site layout. I am still undecided whether or not to close North Place, the road running through the centre of the site. Although it poses constraints, it provides access for vehicles away from the main pedestrian entrance on the A4019, en route from the Old Town and Brewery Quarter. Currently, I am edging towards maintaining the ends of North Place road, providing vehicle access to the carparks, whilst opening up the centre to allow for pedestrianisation through the site. My initial concept is inspired by the ecology of the surrounding area - a bioregion that integrates with the local environment. Geographical features of the Severn and Avon Vales provide a foundation - rolling hills, low lying meadows and agricultural fields.  The multi-storey carpark will feature a rooftop park imitating the undulating hills of the Cotswold scarp, blending with the north-eastern background view of Cleeve Hill. Exploring the Art of Brick Bonding

Brick bonding refers to the arrangement and pattern in which bricks are laid in a structure, such as a wall. It plays a crucial role in the structural stability and the aesthetic appeal of the brick work. There are multiple brick bonds, variations and combinations of patterns, leading to a wide range of possibilities.  The above poster was created for Weekly Task 1: to correclty identify five different brick bonds during a walk in the local area.
