Artwork Inspiration - Patrick Dougherty's Stick Sculptures

In the survey phase of Alney Island, my exploration unearthed intriguing traces of resourceful practices deeply intertwined with the site's rich heritage. Notably, the river edge is said to have been a hub for Schoenoplectus lacustris cultivation, a reed utilised by communities for crafting baskets and various goods. Furthermore, the malleable nature of willow, thriving in the moist conditions of Alney Island, has historically made it a valuable resource.

In my conceptual framework, "Tides of Time," I aim to pay homage to the city and island's history while projecting visions of an ecologically conscious and environmentally protective future. By weaving these two layers together, I aspire to narrate a tale that bridges the past with a forward-thinking, resourceful ethos.

The legacy of willow withies, utilised by diverse societies over time from Vikings to Medieval Europe (two poignant periods in the history of Gloucester), becomes a poignant thread in this narrative.

Patrick Dougherty and his Stick Sculptures, blend organic elements with artistic expression, and provide inspiration for my own venture into designing art installations and landmarks. My focus is on exploring the balance between man-made structures and the beauty of the outdoors, a harmony evident in Dougherty's creations.

In the Castle Meads woodland area, nestled on the urban-rural fringe, my vision extends to incorporating willow and woven sculptures. These installations not only pay homage to a craft deeply rooted in history but also seek to inspire individuals to appreciate and explore the myriad possibilities afforded by the natural materials bestowed upon us by the environment. It is a small yet impactful step toward fostering a connection between art, history, and the bountiful offerings of nature, inviting the community to engage with the landscape in a meaningful way.
